Since 2000, it has been Chancellor White's privilege to deliver the annual State of the University address. As the title suggests, this speech was a yearly event in which he updated the students, faculty, staff and other university stakeholders on the status of the University of Arkansas. It was a chance to trumpet achievements, identify challenges and thank any individuals or units making positive contributions to the overall university mission.

This year, though, we decided to do something radically different. We decided to show the state of the university in moving pictures. The scope of university activities, the scale of recent construction, the depth of research, and the range of unique ideas and opinions of faculty, donors, and students simply could not be adequately conveyed in a speech.
