A native Arkansan, Dr. White is in his 11th year as chancellor of the University of Arkansas. His background includes extensive experience in academe, business and government. Prior to his current position, he served as dean of engineering at Georgia Tech and was a member of the Georgia Tech faculty for 22 years. From 1988 to 1991, he served as assistant director for engineering at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C.
White received his BSIE degree from the University of Arkansas. His graduate work was performed at Virginia Tech (MSIE) and The Ohio State University (PhD). He also has received honorary doctorates from the Katholieke Universiteit of Leuven in Belgium and George Washington University.
White recently concluded serving a second six-year term on the National Science Board; is a member of the National Academy of Engineering; a director of the Arkansas Biosciences Institute; a director of the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport Authority; a past-chair of the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Science and Technology Authority; a past-chair of the Council of Presidents of the Southeastern Universities Research Association; a past-director of the National Collegiate Athletic Association; a past-president and member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award; a past-president of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (lIE); a past-chairman of the American Association of Engineering Societies (AAES); a past-president of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. (GEM); and a member of a number of honor societies-Alpha Pi Mu, Golden Key, Omega Rho, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Pi.
Among White's awards are: Humanitarian of the Year from the National Coalition for Community and Justice; NSF's Distinguished Service Award; ASEE's Donald E. Marlowe Distinguished Education Administration Award; the Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award from the Society of Women Engineers; AAES's Kenneth Andrew Roe Award; lIE's highest award, the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Industrial Engineering Award; lIE's David F. Baker Distinguished Research Award; lIE's Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator Award; lIE's Outstanding Publication Award; lIE's Book of the Year Award (twice); Sigma Nu Fraternity's Regent's Medallion of Merit; and the Material Handling Education Foundation's Reed-Apple Award. He has been named the Society of Manufacturing Engineers' Educator of the Year, the International Material Management Society's Material Manager of the Year and Georgia Tech's Teacher of the Year.
White currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for J. B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc., Logility, Inc., and Motorola, Inc. He previously served on the Board of Directors for Eastman Chemical Company, Russell Corporation, and CAPS Logistics, Inc. His industrial and consulting experience includes employment as an engineer with Eastman Chemical Company, Ethyl Corporation and Rockwell, Inc. He has served as a consultant to such organizations as AT&T, Briggs & Stratton, Burlington, Coca-Cola, Coming, Digital Equipment, DuPont, Federal Reserve Bank, Ford, IBM, L.L. Bean, Tektronix, Texas Instruments, U.S. Navy, Westinghouse and Xerox. He founded a logistics consulting firm, SysteCon, Inc., and served as its chairman until its merger with Coopers & Lybrand.
As Chancellor of the University of Arkansas, White led the University through a $1 billion fund-raising program, one of only 25 under way at that time in the country, and has shepherded the academic standing of the university forward into the top tier of national colleges.
He is married to Mary Elizabeth Quarles White; they have a daughter, a son, three granddaughters and a grandson.
