Statement Regarding Derek Chauvin Verdict

April 20, 2021

While I hope that today’s verdict brings some measure of justice to the George Floyd family, it does little to address the underlying societal issues of racism that Mr. Floyd’s death helped draw much needed attention to. Continuing the discourse about how we got to this point is important and meaningful change is needed for our nation to truly heal and grow stronger.

As we take one small step forward, I encourage you to reach out to someone you care about, your unit's DEI ambassador or a mental health professional to share your feelings in a healthy, healing way, whether that's today, tomorrow or even some day in the future when you least expect it. Meanwhile, hug your loved ones and know that you belong at the U of A.

Mr. Floyd will not be forgotten. His death will continue to inspire us to do more than talk about respecting our shared humanity, but to live out that ideal, every one of us, every day.
